Valentine's Day was named after St. Valentine of Rome, the patron saint of lovers. He lived in the 3rd century and married couples according to the Christian ritual, although the emperor had forbidden this act. According to tradition, the marriages of these couples seemed to have taken place under favorable conditions. Valentinus is said to have given the couple flowers from his garden.
After Valentinus was beheaded on February 14, 269 by order of the emperor, this date became his memorial day.
Starting in the 15th century, so-called "Valentine's couples" formed in England, sending each other small gifts or poems. The oldest surviving Valentine's Day work is a 15th century rondeau by Duke Charles of Orleans to his wife, which begins as follows: "I am weary of love, my sweet Valentine...".
Happy V-Day!
